I am absolutely terrible at sports

No, really, I am. I have always chosen art or music or mock trial (don\'t laugh!) over kicking the ball around or shooting hoops. It was harder for me to get an A in Freshman Wellness than it was in AP English... And it wasn\'t just the physical side of it, it was also the dressing down. How boring and ugly are gym clothes?? Seriously. But then a few weeks ago I saw the sign-up sheet for coed intramural volleyball as I was walking down the hall to the bathroom-- and for some reason, I signed up. At the time I wouldn\'t have been able to tell you why I signed up since I was slightly lost on the matter myself. Three weeks and three games later, I have a bit more to say. Regardless of my skill level, I love being on an intramural sports team... And I think you should join me. Why? Here\'s the list: 1.It\'s one way to get some physical activity into your day. We spend way too much of our days sitting: sitting in class, sitting at your desk studying, sitting to eat... Get up, get active, and go play! 2.There\'s no pressure-- it is what you make of it. If your team wants to practice during the week, great! But the only set structure for intramural sports is a game once a week (for most schools). That means it\'s not a huge commitment at all. Just remember, pick your players according to what you want to get out of the activity. If you want to be competitive and do well, pick people with a similar mindset. Or, if you want it to be laid-back fun, make sure everyone on your team wants that too. 3.It\'s a perfect study break. When I\'ve been studying for hours, my productivity starts to fizzle out. On nights where I have an intramural game I look forward to a break from the typical evening routine. Usually the game takes up just an hour of my time, and after using the physical activity as study break as well as an outlet for all my pent-up energy, I can return to the books with renewed focus and increased productivity. 4.Clothing is optional. And by that I mean there aren\'t rules for a certain uniform you have to wear. Say good-bye to the mundane days of dressing down and create themes for your team\'s outfits each week: beach day, hippie day, red day... Or, make some sweet team shirts together and rep some unified team pride on game days. 5.It\'s an opportunity to meet and get to know new people. Sure, the games are only one night a week. But you establish a common ground with other people that carries over throughout the week. You can laugh about last night\'s game together, spend time planning outfits/creating shirts, or go out to get dessert to celebrate after a fun game. And when everyone and everything\'s new to you, sometimes all it takes is a place to start. Intramural sports can be exactly that. 6.You have the freedom to try something new. Maybe you\'ve played basketball all through high school and have always wanted to try something different like bowling or badminton. Inexperience doesn\'t hold anybody back in intramural sports, you get to dabble in whatever strikes your fancy. Explore all the different leagues your school has to offer, you might be surprised by the opportunities at hand. Lastly, the underlying reason is that it\'s FUN. Chances are you\'ve got a number of student loans helping you pay for your college experience - get the most out of it that you can, including sports. Put all the above reasons together and this last reason seems obvious: you get to infuse physical activity into a dormant day, have some light-hearted competition, put down the books for an hour or so, wear sweet outfits of your choice, meet cool people, and try something you\'ve always been curious about. Do I need to say more? Well, I will, just in case you haven\'t gotten the point: Whether you\'re awesome at sports or not is irrelevant to why you should join an intramural because there are a million other good reasons to join separate from the sports side of it. And like I highlighted in reason #2, it is what you make of it. That\'s the beauty of intramural sports. So why not give it a try? Maybe it\'ll turn out to be as great of an experience for you as it was for me.
